Tour No.1 |
This is a very enjoyable tour taking in some of the most beautiful and Historic sites in Co.Meath. The tours are private tours guided by myself (Derek) which is the most enjoyable way to see some of the most Historic sites in Ireland.
Full history will be given for each site visited. |

First Stop

Newgrange is one of the passage tombs of the Brú na Bóinne complex in County Meath, one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world and the most famous of all Irish prehistoric sites. Newgrange was built in such a way that at dawn on the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, a narrow beam of sunlight for a very short time illuminates the floor of the chamber at the end of the long passageway. |
Second Stop

Home to 15th century Slane Abbey. St. Patrick lit his Pascal Fire on the Hill of Slane, in direct opposition to the pagan beliefs of the High King.
Located just outside Slane off the N2

Third Stop

At the Hill of Tara, Irish myth, legend and history are one - this magical site has been home to gods and goddesses, to druids and warriors, and to Ireland’s High Kings.
Tara is imbued with a magical, mythical atmosphere. It is the stuff of legends, the home of gods and heroes, not mere mortals. |
Fourth Stop

Bective Abbey was founded in 1150 by Murchadh O' Melaghin, King of Meath, for the Cistercians, and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. It was an abbey of some importance as the Abbot was a spiritual lord and sat in the Parliament of the Pale. Hugh De Lacy, was buried there in 1195, but was eventually moved to Dublin. |
Final Stop

Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was constructed over a thirty year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1176 in an attempt to curb the expansionists policies of Richard de Clare, {Strongbow}. |
Prices are based on a number of factors such as collection point, no. of people, and method of transport.
The following are for example only and are confirmed prior to the tour.
(a) Four people collected by car in Co. Meath - Total price €170.00 (€42.50 ea)
(b) Eight people collected by bus in Co. Meath -Total price €220.00
(c) Above tours collected in Dublin - Add €20.00 to above tours.
Entry fees are not included and currently are as follows:
Newgrange - €6.00 per person (€5 per OAP or Student)
Trim Castle - €4.00 per person (€3 per OAP or Student)
Others are free.
Lunch is not included, however we can stop for lunch if you wish.
